The Joshua Tree, known to some as the “Guardian of the Desert,” is in its blooming season thru the end of this April. Trees in the lower altitudes are already losing their blooms while those in higher elevations are just showing early signs of flowering.
The “Joshua Tree” was named such by Mormon settlers in the 19th Century who thought the arm-like branches resembled Joshua reaching his arms into the air to pray to God. Its botanical name is Yucca brevifolia.
Joshua Trees do not bloom every year. Like many desert plants, blooming depends on rainfall at the right time and a good freeze. The desert experienced both this year and blooming Joshua Trees are abundant right now.
If you are interested in viewing Joshua Trees and some of the other desert plants currently in bloom, check out the Joshua Tree National Park. It is worth the drive up the hill. But make the trip soon as no one knows when they will bloom again.
