Despite the fact that Grand Theft Auto V didn’t release until September of last year, Rockstar Games’ open-world crime title became the top selling game of 2013. Game Informer reported on Jan 17 that the latest installment of the popular GTA series grabbed the number one spot for game sales according to a recent NPD group report. The sales figures were pulled off of physical copies sold and thus didn’t count digital downloads.

Pushing the success of Rockstar’s prized franchise even farther, GTA 5 has broken numerous sales records since its initial release on Sept 17. The launch of GTA Online continued to help sell units after access to the title’s online multiplayer mode became available as a free title update on Oct 1. GTA Online allows anyone who owns a copy of Grand Theft Auto V to connect to online servers to create their own character in order to play alongside others in both competitive and cooperative mission types.

Grand Theft Auto V launched on Sept 17 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game allows gamers to switch between three separate playable protagonists as they perform a series of heist missions across the fiction city of Los Santos.
