Dan Houser has made some comments about the general review process for video games. In an interview with The Guardian (via Playstation Lifestyle) on Sept. 13, the co-writer of the “Grand Theft Auto” series (including the upcoming “GTA 5” title) revealed that gaming reviews are often broken down into a checklist of features such as graphics and sound. The development team felt like they should have “made a lawnmower” instead of a video game as a result.
Dan Houser believed that reviews should focus on the experience as a whole instead of its parts. He went on to mention that the development team built games like “GTA 5” as a “total experience.” You can check out some screens from the newest “Grand Theft Auto” title in the slideshow on the top left-hand side of this article and the full statement from Dan House regarding the general video game review process below (courtesy of The Guardian):
You know, game reviewing, when it sort of breaks down into checklists, you feel like you may as well have made a lawnmower. It feels odd to me. I mean, games are sort of like a machine in some ways, but I still think that’s a strange way to think about them. Don’t think about the graphics or the music or whatever, just think about the whole. Was the experience engaging? That’s what we’re going for. We tailor our stories and our mission designs to make this total experience that will feel good alongside the graphics, alongside the physics – it should all feel cohesive, it should feel that the whole world exists and you can’t really separate the elements. It’s all got to gel together – that’s when we think we’ve been successful.
The first reviews for “GTA 5” are expected to be made available just before the launch of the video game on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The previous installments in the series are critically-acclaimed and ranked among the highest-scoring video games in history.
Dan Houser’s latest project is officially set to launch for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 current-generation platforms on Sept. 17 in North America as well as other regions around the globe. You can pre-order the product from Amazon in the following link: “GTA 5”
