The switchable main characters of Grand Theft Auto V were originally intended to be included much earlier in the franchise’s history. Speaking to Develop on Oct 3, Rockstar North President Leslie Benzies revealed that the idea for multiple protagonists was originally intended to be a part of GTA: San Andreas.
Fans might remember that the last time they visited to fictional state based upon real-world California, the game encompassed three different cities. The initial plan was to base a playable character inside each one of the locations. This would have brought the triple protagonist system to the Grand Theft Auto franchise nearly nine years earlier than GTA 5.
Unfortunately, Rockstar Games just couldn’t pull off having multiple main characters due to technical limitations at the time. Three characters would latterly require triple the amount of memory to run which wasn’t possible to pull off then. However, the idea of featuring multiple cities was doable and thus that feature remained in the final version of GTA: San Andreas.
Grand Theft Auto V is now available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
