Grand Theft Auto V launched to massive sales numbers in September for the PS3 and Xbox 360 with over $1 billion made in the first three days. It turns out that the digital release on the Playstation Network was a record-breaker too according to a Sony report on Monday.
GTA V passed The Last of Us from Naughty Dog to become the "biggest ever digital release" on PSN according to a post on the European Playstation Blog. Unsurprisingly, the latest from Rockstar Games sat atop the best-seller charts for September both in Europe and North America as a result.
Of the other big September digital releases, Diablo III came in second in North America but finished fourth in Europe with GTA IV taking the third slot. Meanwhile, FIFA 14 finished second in Europe and third in North America.
Microsoft, Sony and even Nintendo are all pushing for digital sales as downloadable titles take an ever increasing share of the market. It will be interesting to see the acceptance of downloading PS4 and Xbox One games though as AAA game sizes for the next-gen consoles will approach 50 GB and more.
