With the next installment to the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise scheduled to be released later this year, “GTA 5” intends to improve on every aspect of its predecessor. Speaking with Take-Two's Karl Slatoff, yesterday GameSpot discussed details about why releasing a new “Grand Theft Auto” title every two years would degrade the franchise.
"Often times people ask us 'Why don't you come out with Grand Theft Auto every two years?' To us, that doesn't make sense, because Grand Theft Auto, every single time it comes out, is a brand new experience. You can't possibly do that in two years. And if we did that, our product would fatigue and the franchise would degrade from a value perspective."
While many popular franchises are now targeting yearly release cycles, Take-Two and Rockstar Games does not intend to decrease the value of the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise by implementing a one or two-year development cycle. As stated by GameSpot, Rockstar's Leslie Benzies explained that the company could release new “Grand Theft Auto” titles every year, but this would not progress the franchise. Eventually, fans would lose interest in repetitive content.
