The NPD has released the sales data for video games in the month of June. According to a report from Ausgamers on July 18, the PS4 managed to outsell the Wii U and Xbox One despite strong pushes from the competition. Nintendo released the Wii U "Mario Kart 8" Deluxe Console Set, which has sold out at most major retailers, when the popular racing game was released in late May. Microsoft also removed the Kinect camera of the Xbox One in order to drop the price of the next-generation system to $399.99.
The PS4 was still able to handily sell more than its closest rivals. The Xbox One took second place, more than doubling itssales from the previous month. The Wii U ended up being third although it got a significant boost due to the continued success of "Mario Kart 8," which ended up being the second best-selling game of the month.
The most successful software product was "Watch Dogs." The other notable titles are "Minecraft PS3 Edition" and "Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition," which combined to sell the third most units despite not having as big of development budgets as the other games on the list. Despite the announcement of the PC, PS4 and Xbox One ports at E3 2014, "GTA 5" appeared in the 10th position. You can find the full rankings on Games Industry International.
Both "Minecraft" and "GTA 5" should remain on the charts for the foreseeable future. "Minecraft PS4 Edition," "Minecraft Vita Edition" and "Minecraft Xbox One Edition" are coming out digitally next month. Based on the release patterns of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, the upcoming ports should also hit retailers in the relatively near future.
