Scottish newspaper The Scotsman (via Kotaku) is reporting that the development and market budget for GTA V is £170 million ($266 million). This not only puts the highly anticipated open-world title at the top of the list of most expensive games ever made but also puts the game up there with the most expensive movies as well.
Only Disney Films' Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at $300 million has a larger budget than Grand Theft Auto V per reported numbers while other movies such as Tangled, Spider-Man 3 and John Carter of Mars were produced for slightly less.
It's unknown how accurate The Scotman's numbers are - Rockstar declined to provide a comment to Gamespot - but, if true, it shows the level of production being put into modern games. GTA V has been in production for five years with analysts predicting it will sell up to 25 million copies in the first year and earning $1.56 billion in sales. Meanwhile, Take-Two Interactive predicts that the game and previous Grand Theft Auto titles will generate 65 percent of its revenue.
Grand Theft Auto V is set for a Sept. 17 release on the PS3 and Xbox 360 with its multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online, launching Oct. 1.
