Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to dominate the video game landscape as, according to a report today from MCV-UK, the Rockstar Games juggernaut has sold more than any other Western-made title in Japan in the history of the region.
According to the latest Media Create charts, the PlayStation 3 version of GTA 5 sold 360,115 units in its first week in Japan. The Xbox 360 numbers impress too, pushing 26,612 units of that console’s version of the game, landing it ninth on last week’s chart.
Combined together, the units sold in the Japanese region have already eclipsed the last-known lifetime sales of the game’s previous effort GTA 4.
GTA 5 for the PS3, however, still fell second to Pokemon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS, which pushed 1.866 million units, nearly a million more units sold than the combined sales of the next 19 titles on Media Create’s Top 20 chart.
Last month an analyst with Cowen & Company projected the sales of GTA 5 had already surpassed 15 million and expected sales to reach 25 million units by this time next year.
