The budget behind the development and marketing the upcoming multiplatform video game, “GTA 5,” has been revealed. As reported by The Scotsman (via Cinema Blend) on Sept. 8, the newest “Grand Theft Auto” installment is the most expensive video game ever produced.
In total, “GTA 5” costs 170 million in Euro, which is approximately $265 million when converted to U.S. dollars. That amount more than double the budget for “GTA 4,” which was around $100 million. It also handily beat out the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” massively multiplayer online role-playing game that ended up costing $200 million.
Even with the historically high budget, “GTA 5” should quickly become profitable. Analysts believed that 25 million copies of the sequel will be shipped within the first year of release. As a result, approximately $1.57 billion worth of revenue is expected to be generated.
“GTA 5” has only been confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms so far. However, Rockstar Games previously ported the prior “Grand Theft Auto” titles to other systems such as the PC. Porting the video game to other platforms such as the PC, PS4 and Xbox One would further help the company recoup the initial development and marketing costs.
“GTA 5” is shipping first for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on Sept. 17 in North America and other regions around the world. You can check out some screens from the title in the slideshow near the top of this article. You can pre-order the product from Amazon in the following links: “GTA 5"
