Rockstar Games’ spared no expense in creating Grand Theft Auto V, which releases later this month, has it has now been revealed that the upcoming game was the most expensive game in history. The Scotsman broke the news on Sept 8 that the budget of GTA 5 rivals those of modern day Hollywood blockbusters.
Costing $265 million to make, Grand Theft Auto V had a bigger budget than many blockbuster movies such as the Avengers, John Carter, or Avatar. A listing showing the cost to make other recent video games releases shows that GTA IV, Skyrim, and Halo 3 didn’t even break the $100 million threshold. In fact, the title that comes nearest to Grand Theft Auto V’s budget was Electronic Arts’ Star Wars: The Old Republic, which cost $200 million in total.
Grand Theft Auto V releases on Sept 17 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game will put players in control of three separate protagonists who each have their own life, personality, and unique action skills. Given the ability to switch between all three characters at will, gamers will embark on a series of heist robberies throughout the franchise’s fictional state of San Andreas. On Oct 1, the game will receive a free update which will enable the title’s multiplayer mode title GTA Online.
