Philadelphia-area native Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins was one of the more admired drag racers in a sport where there’s many to admire. His talents didn’t just lie in racing, however - he was an engine builder extraordinaire, no doubt due to his Ivy League mechanical engineering degree.
Grumpy left us just over a year ago, but you can purchase over 150 artifacts of drag racing history in Indianapolis on May 14-19 at Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic.
Visiting the Mecum site, you’ll see a collection of trophies and other awards, racing regalia, and carburetors and other knicknacks to Grumpy’s very own 2004 GTO driver . . . and you can own it all! Or, if you’re like me, you’ll realize it’s more important to have food on your plate. But how often does one have the opportunity to purchase a piece of drag racing history?
Interestingly enough, his GTO was equipped with an automatic transmission. I dunno - not shifting the gears myself would make me grumpy.
