Gruesome discovery of decapitated black cats in Burlington County, NJ

A gruesome discovery has authorities concerned and residents shocked in a Pemberton Township neighborhood.

On September 27, a homeowner on North Lakeshore Drive called police after finding the bodies of two decapitated black cats on her driveway. The bodies were cut open from breastbone to hips with what is believed to be a very sharp, clean-edged knife, and their intestines were wrapped around their hind legs.

The case was turned over to Burlington County SPCA. On October 1, Chief Richard Forberg headed a team of investigators to search the wooded area for the cats' heads and possibly other dead animals.

According to CBS Philly, investigators believe that because no blood trails were found near the remains, the cats were killed elsewhere and then purposely placed on the driveway. The resident of the home has a reputation for feeding stray cats, so this may have been a scare tactic to force her to stop. No owners have reported their cats missing.

After checking with experts, investigators do not believe this act to be one of a religious offering or sacrifice, or witchcraft.

Forberg believes it may be someone in the neighborhood, but the resident whose home was targeted believes it's the work of a stranger. There are no suspects at this time.

“We think this is a very, very disturbed individual who did this. And they may have done it as a warning, and we are taking it very seriously,” he said.

The connection between the killing of animals, as a precursor to killing humans, has been well documented.

They are advising that people living in this area keep a close watch on their pets.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is urged to call the SPCA Tip Line 800-582-5979.
