A familiar sound animals make, but Growl is also a company started by Dinesh Lalvani in early 2013. Growl Media is a leading app development company that is striving to educate and stimulate the minds of young people.
I say they are succeeding on many levels.
First, with a cool new app for kids ages up to 6 that may be motivated by some cute animals to read, comprehend, and get their brains working. The app would be Alfie, Haathi and The Magic Bioscope- available for your iOS device.
I love children's reading apps and I love the use of animals in a story to get the point across. They also throw in a little culture- and that's no accident.
“Almost all of the content that kids in our regions consume comes from the Western markets and even though they’re brilliant, there’s so little cultural context in them. I felt that there was a need for stories that had more cultural markers in them and the characters of Alfie and Haathi were born out of that,” explains Lalvani.
Alfie, Haathi and The Magic Bioscope is not only beautiful to look at, but it's also interactive and kept my attention as I followed the adventures of Alfie and his elephant friend Haathi. The graphics are superb, but not so intense that it takes away from the main goal of the app.
Heck, kids will even enjoy learning what a bioscope is, and how your imagination can be such a powerful tool when it comes to learning.
Per Growl Media, here are the listed features of Alfie, Haathi and The Magic Bioscope:
- An interactive storytelling experience.
- “Read to me” option allows parents to turn off the voice-over and read the storybook to their children themselves.
- Page selector allows for easy navigation to a non-consecutive page.
- Professional audio narration.
- Custom background audio for each scene created by acclaimed Bollywood music producer Ram Sampath.
- Hints to guide parents and kids by highlighting all interactions in each scene.
- Objects, words and characters come to life with animations and/or interesting and educational factoids.
- The app has been optimized for Retina displays and the iPad.
Growl Media is also excited about their new app development platform called Eureekah.
I've always said that people a talent for creativity would make excellent app developers, but there was no easy way to them to transition to the field.
Growl's Eureekah is browser-based and easy to use. Like the term drag-and-drop? I do, and Eureekah allows creative professionals to think like they would on a creative project and make an app.
Also Eureekah offers an animation sequencer that allows for that creativity to flow with animations and interactions that are only limited by one's imagination. Since you will be competing for eyes among thousands of app, you need something to stand out and Eureekah stands out.
Lalvani says Eureekah was made so rubust to be one-stop shopping for app developers that work on multiple platforms.
“To do that, we needed to be able to support multiple languages and have the ability to publish cross-platform on iOS, Android and Amazon Kindle devices. We also needed to support multiple resolutions for various device form factors. Eureekah does all that and more and we’re very excited with the results.”
Alfie, Haathi and The Magic Bioscope was developed on Eureekah, so you can see what your results could look like.
Eureekah allowed developers at Growl Media to create the story in a collaborative effort. Much of our work is done by collaboration these days. It can be tricky, but Eureekah eliminates those headaches along with those pesky Skype or conference calls.
