The weather is cold, the sky is not so bright and the lawn grass is brown. Placing a few bulbs throughout the lawn in the fall or summer can bring about a bit of brightness to long winter days.
Ipheion, Muscari and Crocus bulbs are early blooming plants that come in bright colors from blue to white to yellow. Their bloom time is short and gone by the time your lawn needs its first mowing.
Ipheion is a very old plant that is commonly seen in shades of blue with small flowers holding six petals. It is part of the Allium family such as leeks and garlic. One crush of the Ipheion plant and you will get the distinct scent of this plants family background.
Muscari is sometimes called the grape hyacinth as their flowers look like small grapes in shades of purple, blue and white. Muscari is a fragrant plant; another good reason for placing this bulb in your landscape. The Crocus blub naturalizes well into the home landscape. It comes in many colors from white to pink and striped varieties. The Crocus flower is shaped much like a very small tulip with six petals.
