Five of Baltimore’s top political empowerment people gain recognition at Freedom Fund Breakfast
It was 48 years ago since America experienced one of its finest moments in its rich history, witnessing a March on Washington to rival none other. Despite the similarly organized Million Man March or even the crowd we witnessed on the National Mall on January 20, 2009, with the inauguration of our first African American President of the United States; neither could duplicate the intensity nor the magic of the moment during that historical day in 1963.
However, while America honors Dr. King this weekend in Washington with a well deserved monument in the town in which his ‘Dream’ became a reality; in the City of Baltimore, 40-miles away, merely a hop, skip and a jump from the monumental District of Columbia, GCOMM Media shall be honoring local heroes who continue to empower the lives of area residents while keeping Dr. King’s Dream alive and well! These individuals consider their responsibilities of educating and motivating the Baltimore electorate a great honor and privilege, which is highlighted in their various outlets of communication.
This Saturday August 27, 2011 from 9-11AM at the beautiful Charles Theater (1711 N. Charles St.) the Baltimore media giant known as GCOMM Media Co., will be honoring these great individuals with the ValueMyVote2011 ‘Keep the Dream Alive’ awards. Each will be celebrated individually for their great achievements while the attendees are treated to a magnificent breakfast catered by Baltimore’s Best Food Catering Inc. with Abraham McCauley serving eggs, bacon, sausage, homefries, grits, coffee, tea, juices and more. Also, to celebrate the day they will have local talent performing, such as Hip-Hop mogul Chris ‘Comrade’ Goodman; along with the comedic talents of Craig ‘Give me the Loot’ Smoot. All events photographed by Baltimore’s own JustJazmine and hosted by the GCOMM girls.
Those to be honored are some great community driven, and well loved, individuals such as Bmorenews creator Doni Morton Glover, who is being honored as the Web Journalist of the Year; Latino community doll, Y. Maria Welch, the former Chair of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce being honored as the Activist of the Year. Richard Sher, the Host of the political and community show known as Square Off on ABC TV2 being honored as the TV Reporter of the Year; as well as the former Afro reporter Shernay Williams being given the ultimate award of the day, as the Journalist of the Year! This award was first given to Fox45’s Patrice Harris in its first year of existence, now being passed onto another great Baltimore female journalist.
Last but certainly not least, the Lifetime Achievement Award is being given to someone many say was Baltimore’s best Mayor in the past two decades, and certainly a woman who has been a historic figure in this City, as the first African American female Council President and Mayor. Sheila Ann Dixon, the mother of two and one of the city’s longest serving and most esteemed public servants in its history is certainly well deserving of this award and its achievement. Continuing to be a leader in her community and throughout the City even when not in elective office, Dixon has become one of Baltimore’s most sought after mentors and a role model to many young African American females.
