Group cardio offers fun, friends, fitness

Getting into shape is a personal decision. No one can do it for you. It requires individual commitment and hard work. But that doesn't mean it has to be a solitary activity. Group fitness sessions in and around Atlanta provide exercisers of all levels an opportunity to sweat and socialize.

Body Design offers Cardio Blast every Saturday at 8 a.m. in Piedmont Park. It is a free and intense 45-minute cardio workout consisting of a 5-minute warm-up, 5-minute stretch, 30-minute cardio routine, and 5-minute cool down.

"You don't have to just run; we sprint up stairs and use the practice fields for isolated work," said Amy Lowman, who enjoys the weekend workout as well as small-group training sessions during the week at Body Design. "It's nice to be able to exercise with a group of people every week," she says.

The Fowler YMCA offers about 70 classes per week. Some of these classes include Abs and Back, Body Sculpting, Cardio Kickboxing, Pilates, Step, and Yoga. In addition, many area gyms and fitness clubs such as Gold's Gym, Bally Total Fitness, and Ladies Workout Express offer programs in aerobics, kickboxing, pilates, and more.
