Groundhog Super Bowl: General Beauregard Lee versus Punxsutawney Phil

Today is the annual Super Bowl for football lovers... and the annual Groundhog Day for those wishing to see the last of winter.

The set time for this runoff between two woodchucks (each who declare that they are better than the other at predicting the coming weather forecast) was between 7:15 AM and 7:20 AM according to when you last wound your watch.

The folklore is that a bright sunny day will allow the animal to see its shadow and will retreat back into his burrow in the ground. He will not come out until the next six weeks of continued winter is over. If, however, it is a cloudy day and he does not see his shadow, then his prediction will be that spring is on the way and will be earlier.

While various cities have continued with this tradition, there are two groundhogs (woodchucks) that seem to have an old grudge. One is from Pennsylvania and the other from Georgia. To see just what kind of animals these guys are – besides being party animals, you can read more here.

General Beauregard (Beau) Lee is from Georgia (imagine that with a name like that); and Punxsutawney Phil (who can even say that) both were scheduled to emerged at about the same time from their underground bunker to test the conditions for either a continued hard winter or to feel a breath of approaching spring in the air. Gen Lee was scheduled at 7:15 a.m and Phil at about 7:20 a.m.

In the past there are those who say that General Beau is more accurate than Punxsutawney Phil by 94% to 39%. But we all know how politicians are with figures. Phil says his predictions are more like 84%.

General Beau Lee resides at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Georgia just outside of Atlanta and Punxsutawney Phil resides in where else but Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Phil has been at this longer and he should have the edge. However, this is not the first rodeo for the General as he has been working hard one day a year for the last 33 years.

And today February 2, 2014 – the winner is………the people of Georgia as Gen. Beau Lee predicts an early spring. Drag out those spring gardening catalogs and get those bulb and seed orders in so you will win the Yard of the Month in April or May.

And today February 2, 2014 – the loser is…..the people of Pennsylvania as they hunker down to another six weeks of low temperatures and more possible snow storms. Get those snow plows oiled up and ready.

And today, February 2, 2014 – General Lee predicted an early spring at 8:33 a.m. with overcast and cloudy skies. Temperature around 44 degrees with fog.

And today, February 2, 2014 – Punxsutawney predicted at 7:28 a.m.six more weeks of winter weather. It is hard to believe he saw his shadow with overcast skies and light rain. Temperature around 37 degrees and rain.

No matter the weather prediction, Valentine’s Day is still scheduled for February 14, 2014 and sorry girls but this is not leap year.
