Groundhog Day free printables: Beat boredom and chills even if winter stays (Video)

Groundhog Day is Feb. 2. According to a Feb. 1 ABC News report, Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil and his relatives have been predicting if winter will stay or if spring will come early since 1887.

Groundhog Day is a fun holiday – partly because it’s so wacky. Explain the history of the day to children, watch news coverage together and then settle down with some free printable games and coloring pages.

Here’s what you need to know: if the furry creature sees his shadow, the legend says there will be six more weeks of winter. However, if he doesn’t see his shadow spring should be right around the corner.

Phil and his ancestors have seen their shadows 99 times, meaning winter stays. They only predicted an early spring by not seeing their shadow 16 times.

Activity Village has free Groundhog Day activities. There are themed word searches, coloring pages and craft ideas. Kids can make a card, get inspired by writing prompts, learn to draw the adorable animals and more.

Rest up for Super Bowl Sunday. Stay warm and toasty inside while keeping the kids entertained with free printables - regardless of what the groundhog predicts.
