Happy Groundhog Day! The scene on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, was predicted to be cold, overcast and rainy, so many did not expect Phil to see his shadow on Groundhog Day 2014. However, the official news is Punxsutawney Phil DID indeed see his shadow on Groundhog Day 2014. According to the Washington Post at 7:25 a.m. on Feb. 2, 2014,
"At 7:25 a.m.Sunday, a raw, cloudy morning, Groundhog Phil saw his shadow in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pa. The appearance of Phil’s shadow means winter will extend well into March according to folklore. Had Phil seen his shadow, it would have meant spring is around the corner."
According to Groundhog.org, "The Prognosticator of Prognosticators, Punxsutawney Phil, did see his shadow." A Tweet from @Visit PA was, "Shadow! Punxsutawney Phil predicts six more weeks of winter!"
Punxsutawney Phil Says Six More Weeks of Winter
According to PennLive.com on Feb. 2, today's crowd could be a record, with Groundhog Day organizers expecting about 35,000 people to crowd into the area. "Phil surveyed his surroundings and saw his shadow, so six more weeks of winter it will be!" claims Groundhog.org. If Punxsutawney Phil lived in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the groundhog MAY have seen his shadow, as the Groundhog Day weather forecast was predicted to be scattered clouds.
This winter has been a cold one and hard on most of the nation. Most of the country is hoping it's cloudy and that Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow today. However, there is some hope ... Punxsutawney Phil's prediction could be wrong, and that would mean an early spring, right? One can only hope!
