How many restaurants in Sacramento received the ground beef now being recalled for possible E-coli O157:H7 contamination? See the October 12, 2011 Associated Press/NBC San Diego article, "Ground Beef Recalled Over E. coli Concerns." Before you order ground meat in any restaurant, you can ask the manager whether the ground beef product is the one named in the FDA news release today.
What's being recalled are bulk ground beef, * 5,10 and 20 lb. cases of ground beef patties, * 10,15,20,30,40, and 50 lb. cases of ground beef taco,* 5,10,15,20,25,30,40,50 and 60 lb. cases of ground beef chili--sent to California restaurants, including those in Sacramento. Did a restaurant near you receive this recalled beef? Check with the restaurant manager to make sure the restaurant has been told about the recall and has checked the shipment.
You'd have to first find out whether the particular eatery or restaurant even received the beef from the company, Commercial Meat Co., which is a Los Angeles, Calif., establishment that is recalling the beef products shipped all over California. So the restaurant would have received the meat from that particular company. The beef also was distributed in Nevada as well.
More than 377,000 pounds of ground beef shipped to restaurants in California and Nevada have been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday. The Los Angeles-based Commercial Meat Co. produced the meat between Sept. 7 and Oct. 6, according to the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The meat recalled includes bulk ground beef, ground beef patties, ground beef taco and ground beef chili. See the FDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) news release for October 12, 2011, "California Firm Recalls Ground Beef Due to Possible E.Coli O157:H7 Contamination."
Each case bears a label with the establishment number "EST. 4873" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products subject to recall were produced between Sept. 7, 2011 and Oct. 6, 2011 and were shipped to restaurants in California and Nevada, as well as one Federal establishment in California for further processing.
Who's Recalling the Beef?

The following ground beef products are subject to recall:
* 5,10,15,20,30,40,50 and 60 lb. cases of bulk ground beef
* 5,10 and 20 lb. cases of ground beef patties
* 10,15,20,30,40 and 50 lb. cases of ground beef taco
* 5,10,15,20,25,30,40,50 and 60 lb. cases of ground beef chili
What's E.coli?
E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness. Whatever other type of ground meat you have, please make sure you cook it thoroughly.
