A ground beef recall was announced by The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) this Monday. An active investigation concerning ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli has led the FSIS to recall 1.8 million pounds of meat products, according to Fox News reports.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified possible ties that the tainted beef were produced out of the Wolverine Packing Company located in Detroit, Mich. Wolverine had distributed the affected recalled products to restaurants and retailers nationwide.
Working in conjunction with the FSIS – collecting data of reported case illnesses between April 22 to May 2 – the CDC has acknowledged 11 reported cases of people sickened with Escherichia coli (E. coli.) involving four states; the reported cases affected states in Mass., Mich., Mo. and Ohio.
Assuring the public that none of the products recalled were distributed to the Department of Defense, the National School Lunch Program or catalog/ internet sales, it is alerting all restaurants and retailers to check any beef shipments bearing the establishment “2574B.”
Restaurants and retailers were urged to identify where the origin of their beef supply are coming from in addition, to not serve, sell or attempt to cook any of the recalled ground beef.

No cases involving fatalities as a result of this recall have been reported to date.
Lyle Orwig, a spokesperson hired by the Wolverine Packing Company had defended the company’s beef in response to Monday’s news release. Orwig said the company’s beef had been checked for E. coli prior to distribution and insists there is no link connecting them to this recall.
According to Orwig’s statement, “All of our product is tested when it’s made and so none of our tests were positive for E. coli, so it was not a positive link to our product.”

The USDA strongly urges everyone to cook raw meats all the way through to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce their risk of E. coli before consuming.
According to the USDA concerning who are most at risk with the bacterium and their symptoms, “E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.”
