Groucho's house is on the market
Wanna live in the house of comic icon (Groucho Marx), designed by one of the famous California architects (Wallace Neff)?
The house is on the market.
But, before you rush out to apply for that mortgage, the price is almost $13 million. And there isn't that much left of Neff's work. This Beverly Hills home was built by Neff for Groucho Marx but has been renovated so that, as the LA Times Hot Property column puts it, the footprint remains.
He was born Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx in 1890, one of the family of famous Marx Brothers along with Harpo and Chico. He made over a dozen oddball feature films with his brothers and then went on to host of the radio and television game shows You Bet Your Life.
According to Wikipedia - His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as glasses, cigars, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows.
Built in 1956 the house now sports a pool, a spa, a waterfall, an alfresco dining area, patios and a fire pit extend the living space outdoors. The gated lot of three-quarters of an acre has downtown L.A. and canyon views.
Groucho died in 1977 at the age of 86. Someone has been living in, or at least owning the house since, but it's not clear who.
