Thomas J. Shannon, a Grosse Pointe lawyer, has received a 90-day suspension from the practice of law in Michigan, the State of Michigan Attorney Discipline Board (ADB) reported Friday. The suspension went into effect on March 14, 2014.

ADB Tri-County Hearing Panel #9 found that Shannon neglected a client’s litigation matter; failed to seek the lawful objectives of his client; and failed to act with reasonable diligence and promptness. The panel ordered Shannon’s suspension from the practice of law in Michigan for 90 days, and directed him to pay costs of $2,355.01.

ADB records show that Shannon’s disciplinary history also contains a reprimand in 1988, a two-year suspension in 1991, and a 90-day suspension in 2012.

In another recent action, Lansing lawyer Robert Joseph Payne received a 180-day suspension, effective March 12, 2014. Payne did not appear at his disciplinary hearing, and was found to be in default for his failure to file an answer to the formal complaint.

Based on the default and the evidence submitted, ADB Ingham County Hearing Panel #4 found that Payne neglected a legal matter entrusted to him; failed to seek his client's lawful objectives through reasonably available means permitted by law; failed to act with reasonable diligence and promptness in representing his client; failed to adequately communicate with his client; and failed to refund an unearned fee and documents belonging to his client upon termination of the representation. The panel further found that Payne knowingly failed to respond to lawful demands for information from a disciplinary authority; and failed to timely answer a request for investigation.

The panel ordered Payne’s suspension from the practice of law in Michigan for 180 days, and directed him to pay restitution of $500.00 and costs of $1,855.61.
