Groovin’ on the James: Richmond Folk Festival 2011

A rich and diverse selection of artists, performers, vendors and of course fans, crowded onto Brown’s Island and environs to enjoy this year’s edition of The Richmond Folk Festival.

The seven-stage venue on Brown’s Island and Tredegar accommodated 32 musical acts and performers representing various slices of Americana.  The food options were simply wonderful and represented specialities from a smorgasbord of ethnic culinary delights.

The fans attending the 3-day event were delightful and seemed to enjoy every aspect of the revised edition of what was once known as The National Folk Festival which was presented in 2006 & 2007.  This is the 4th anniversary of the event with its new format.

Most of the performers at this year’s event were first-timers indicating the organizer’s aim to keep the festival fresh and exciting.  Three sets that were especially well attended on Saturday were:

The Mighty Diamonds, the legendary torch carriers for authentic reggae. Performing since 1969, the roots reggae trio rocked the Dominion Dance Pavilion in such an electrifying performance they had the crowd swaying to the drum-heavy and rhythmic beats of the sounds of Jamaica within minutes after taking the stage.  The trio consists of Donald "Tabby" Shaw, Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson.

The Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera, one of the most compellingly beautiful performances both visually and artistically.   From China, Qi Shu Fang has been studying opera since the age of four and her operatic style is simply riveting.

Los Tres Reyes brought the soothing and sensual sounds of Mexican love sounds to this year’s festival.  Led by twin brothers Gilberto and Raul Puente, this trio proved the adage the language of love is truly universal.

While the festive mood of this year's event can be described in words, perhaps seeing is better.  So, we invite you to see for yourselves by clicking on the following link:
