1, T: Discard a card. Put a study counter on Grimoire of the Dead

T: Remove three study counters from Grimoire of the Dead and sacrifice it: Put all creature cards in all graveyards onto the battlefield under your control.  They are black zombies in addition to their other colors and types.

There are plenty of cool interactions available for Grimoire of the Dead, everything from making an “instant-win” army at the end of the opponent’s turn and then swinging for a win to filling up your graveyard with an angry horde utilizing Mirror-Mad Phantasm or a host of other Innistrad cards.

There is little debate over the potency of the final effect of Grimoire of the Dead, but getting there – that’s the challenge.

While attempts could be made to interact with proliferate mechanics to avoid dealing with three discards and three turns to power up your boneyard book, normally the process of studying these ancient texts will cost a vast amount of time and resources, presenting your opponent with ample opportunity to either remove the tome or focus on attacking you while you work on your undead studies.

In this way, this legendary book looks like it might be somewhere in line with Lux Cannon – potentially very strong but a large time investment.

If you do get to trigger the Liliana-like ability of the Grimoire a game win is in the cards.  In Limited Grimoire of the Dead will be a dangerous card to deal with, but it remains to be seen if something like this can handle a Standard environment that will likely be unforgiving to its relatively slow speed.

Grimoire is a fun option for Commander as well, but you can be sure you will be receiving the ire of an entire table of companions when it hits the board.
