Is there anything better than grilling out? It is so nice to get out of the kitchen and fire up the grill, and not have a mountain of pots and pans waiting for you at the end of the meal. Sausage and onions are a classic favorite. In my recipe, we jazz up the onions with some fantastic sweet and savory flavors.
Italian sausage can be found in any Publix or Kroger right here in Nashville. It doesn't matter if you like the hot, mild or sweet varieties for this recipe. Just buy whatever you love. Let's get cooking!
Grilled sausage with onion relish
- 1 1/2 cups yellow onion, diced
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
Preheat grill. Combine onions, vinegar, water, brown sugar and thyme; bring to a boil on medium high heat. Reduce heat to medium low; cook and stir 15 - 20 minutes or until most of the liquid evaporates. Place sausage on grill and cover; grill 15 - 20 minutes, turning occasionally, or until browned. Stir Parmesan cheese into onion mixture. Serve with crusty bread or rolls.
