The Orlando Griffins Rugby Football Club (RFC) won a close match against the St. Petersburg Pelicans RFC by a score of 29 to 26 this past Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26. The clubs met to play this match on the Pelican’s home pitch at Coquina Key Municipal Park in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Both clubs scored four tries and three conversions to earn 26 points. However, the match ended in Orlando’s favor due to the Griffins’ three-point penalty kick in the game. This provided Orlando with a three point advantage at the end of the game.
This match improved Orlando’s record to 5-2-1, while St. Petersburg dropped to 1-5-0 for the season.
Orlando now must wait for the outcome of next week’s Tampa Bay Krewe versus Jacksonville Match (originally scheduled in November) to determine whether the Griffins or the Krewe will secure the top seed for the Northern Division of the Florida Rugby Union (FRU).
Jacksonville defeats Daytona Beach at Huffman Park
The Jacksonville RFC defeated the Daytona Beach Coconuts RFC by a score of 36 to 24 Saturday afternoon at Huffman Park in Jacksonville, Fla. Jacksonville scored six tries and three conversions to earn its 36 points, and limited Daytona Beach to four tries and two conversions (24 points).
The results of this match improved Jacksonville’s record to 3-3-0, while Daytona Beach fell to 2-5-0. Jacksonville will make up its match from last November against the Tampa Bay Krewe this coming Saturday at Huffman Park in Orlando, Fla.
Gainesville wins home match over Treasure Coast
The Gainesville Hogs RFC won its home match against the Treasure Coast Pirates RFC Saturday afternoon at the Gainesville (Fla.) Rugby Club. The final score for the match was 37 to 17 in favor of the hogs.
Gainesville scored five tries, three conversions, and two penalty kicks to earn its 37 points, and held Treasure Coast to three tries and one conversion (17 points). As a result of the match, Gainesville improves its record to 3-1, while Treasure Coast drops to 0-4.
