Griffin Claw unveils new packaging for Screamin' Pumpkin Ale

Birmingham-based Griffin Claw Brewing Co. is releasing its Screamin’ Pumpkin Ale this month, in a convenient four pack of glow-in-the-dark cans! Yes, they glow, which is going to make this beer an attention getter from the time it hits store shelves next week, through Halloween parties and Thanksgiving dinners.

Griffin Claw brewed its spiced pumpkin ale for the first time last year to rave reviews —but only on draft. This year, with the assistance of family-owned Powers Distributing Co., the beer will be available at your favorite craft beer stores in Oakland and Macomb counties.

So what about the beer?

At 5% ABV Screamin' Pumpkin is a session brew that tastes like pumpkin pie in a can! It’s got the right mix of flavors and spices, is not overly sweet, and certainly not quite as filling as eating a pie. There’s some nice spice in the back of the mouth, a dry finish, and I recommend drinking this just below cellar temperature, so that the layers of flavors shine through.

Powers Distributing Retail Development Manager Robert Vedder talked to me about the beer and noted his excitement to get it onto store shelves, saying that canned craft beer is approachable, and well received by customers everywhere. A certified cicerone, Vedder called the ale “incredibly flawless”, and suggested people stock up now, because it could be gone by Halloween. Powers Distributing Co. currently has 2,500 cases of Screamin’ Pumpkin Ale in stock and ready to distribute. Some stores have it already. Vedder expects to have up to 7,000 cases of Screamin’ Pumpkin out across Oakland and Macomb counties by the end of the season.

Griffin Claw’s Scott LePage said their brewery’s can manufacturer, Rexam, ordered special glow-in-the-dark inks to help bring the can design to life. The artwork featured on the can is based on Griffin Claw Master Brewer Dan Rogers’ original look for Screamin’ Pumpkin. Its name and rights were purchased from the former Michigan Brewing Co.

“Screamin' Pumpkin was a great brand before and brewmaster Dan made it even better with our state of the art equipment and his 30 years of expertise,” said LePage. “With the popularity of pumpkin beers and our capability to can, it has been a perfect fit. We can’t wait for this to hit the shelves.”

Watch for a limited run of Bourbon Barrel Imperial Screamin’ Pumpkin in 22 oz bottles in October, at the Griffin Claw Brewery taproom. Griffin Claw is also producing a draft pumpkin-spiced Norm’s Raggedy Ass IPA, coming soon to your favorite craft beer bar.
