Gridiron goodies: Mix up a super bowl of Fido’s Footballs

Who wants to be the top dog among pet owners? Why not send your favorite Retriever out like a star receiver by tossing out a few Fido’s Footballs?

No interceptions will be needed, as most dogs will leap enthusiastically to catch these delicious crunchy canine goodies in one grab. One good toss, and you’ll get your quarter back with change, just watching your terrier tear into these terrific treats.

Just fetch the basic ingredients, fire up the oven, and bake up a batch.

First, gather the ingredients for Fido’s Footballs.

  • 2 cups of boiling water
  • 2 cubes of beef bouillon
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 5 cups of regular flour
  • 1 cup of cooked brown rice

Basic white rice may be substituted for the brown rice, if the water is reduced from two cups to 1 3/4 cups.

Follow these easy instructions to make Fido’s Footballs.

Preheat the oven to 350 (F) degrees.

Heat the water to boiling. Pour two cups of boiling water over the two beef bouillon cubes, Stir gently until the bouillon is completely melted.

Add the egg and vegetable oil, and stir well with a sturdy wooden spoon.

Mix the flour and rice in, and combine all ingredients thoroughly. Begin shaping the mixture into a big ball.

Transfer the ball of dough onto a well-floured counter top. Use bare hands to roll the dough into small football-shaped portions. Flatten the football treats a bit, and place these onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake Fido’s Footballs for one hour.

Remove cookie sheets, and leave treats on them to cool.

Use a metal spatula to slip Fido’s Footballs off carefully and place them in a zippered plastic bag.

Store all leftover or uneaten Fido’s Footballs in the freezer.
