'Grey's Anatomy' Shonda Rhimes says ‘Not Going to See Any Cast Departures'

In episode 15Hard Bargain” on season 9 of Grey’s Anatomy,” many of the core staff resigned over the sale of Seattle Grace to Pegasus. Series creator Shonda Rhimes was reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Feb. 14 as promising "We're not going to see any cast departures."

If you watched the episode which aired Thursday, Feb. 14, then you saw Derek, Meredith, Arizona, Callie and Cristina turn in their resignations in a play to stop the sale of the hospital. Owen was stunned speechless and left wondering about the fate of his hospital just as fans were left wondering what it all means.

The plane crash that killed Mark and Lexie resulted in a settlement of $15 million to each of the survivors and the beneficiaries of those who died. This left the hospital in a crisis as they were left holding the financial bag.

Dr. Alana Cahill, a physician adviser, was brought in to resolve the crises by any means possible which in this case meant the sale of the hospital to a company named Pegasus. Pegasus plans to turn Seattle Grace into a health care mill focusing on numbers not health care.

The entire staff, including the nurses who stage a revolt at one point, hates what Pegasus represents and what Cahill is doing to their hospital. Resentment toward the survivors, their huge settlement and what that settlement has caused is rampant in the hallways. The doctors are feeling the burden of the situation and in order to stop the sale of their beloved hospital, they resign, knowing it will sour the sale.

In spite of the resignations, Rhimes promises none of the cast is leaving. That is a huge relief to fans everywhere.

You can see the next new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at 8 p.m. on ABC.
