'Grey's Anatomy' season 11 spoilers: Gaius Charles, Tessa Ferrer not returning

On Tuesday, March 25 Deadline broke the news that cast members Tessa Ferrer and Gaius Charles will not be returning for the upcoming eleventh season of the medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," which airs on ABC. Both cast members were introduced on the ninth season of the series, but their contracts have not been renewed.

'Grey's Anatomy' characters

Gaius Charles, most well known for playing the role of Brian "Smash" Williams on the football drama "Friday Night Lights," portrayed medical student Shane Ross. Charles became a series regular for season ten and had romances with Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Stephanie Edwards, and one of his first story arcs was his involvement in Heather's death.

Tessa Ferrer, who plays surgical resident Leah Murphy on the series, is a cold but calculated woman who cares deeply about the other interns. She has romances with both Alex Karev and the married Arizona Robbins, causing tension between her and Callie Torres. One of her main story lines involved being bitten by a patient and needing an HIV test afterwards, as well as nearly giving blood to a Jehovah's Witness while on Dr. Yang's service.

Both characters will not be series regulars for season eleven, but they can return for guest spots and will have their character's stories wrapped up, just like previous actors who have left the series. Season ten will also be the last season for Sandra Oh, who has been a series regular since the pilot episode. The eleventh season is scheduled to air next fall on ABC.
