‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 casting news: Caterina Scorsone now series regular

At the end of Season 10 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Derek’s sister, Amelia Shepherd made an unexpected visit. That visit, it turns out, was the precursor to the character becoming a regular on the series according to TV Fanatic on June 23. Caterina Scorsone, who plays Amelia, has been promoted to series regular.

Longtime fans will recall that Amelia has made numerous appearances on the show. She then moved to the “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off series, “Private Practice” where she appeared as a regular for a number of seasons. Now it looks as if she will be a full time resident of Seattle and perhaps on staff at Grey Sloane memorial Hospital.

In April, Scorsone was quoted by TV Fanatic as saying she would “do anything” for showrunner Shonda Rhimes, including 500 episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” – if asked. Perhaps she will get the chance.

What will Amelia’s role be in Season 11 of the hit hospital drama? When season 10 was wrapping up, Derek and Meredith had hit an impasse over their respective careers. Derek had been offered the opportunity of a lifetime but it required that he and his family relocate to Washington D.C. Meredith had just said goodbye to her “person,” Cristina and was angry over not getting her chance to pursue her own work and research because of Derek’s offer.

Just as the show was winding down, Meredith dropped a bomb – she wasn’t going to move to D.C. Amelia had been staying with Mer and Der and was helping out with the kids. We’re guessing that she will continue in that capacity. We also think she’ll take over Derek’s patients and duties at the hospital while providing Meredith some support while Derek goes off to pursue his dream job. How will the long distance marriage thing work? Well now, that’s the big question, isn’t it?

Grey’s Anatomy” will be back on ABC in the fall with Season 11. Welcome back, Caterina!
