Amelia Shepherd, Derek’s sister made an appearance in the last episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” TV fanatic caught up with Caterina Scorsone, the actress who plays Amelia and shared the scoop on what it’s like being back on the show and whether or not Amelia could be a full time member of the cast in their April 25 post.

Amelia was a regular on ABC’s “Private Practice” which went off the air about a year ago. She’s made a couple of appearances on Grey’s Anatomy in the past but this time she’s back for a few episodes. Though her first appearance was a little light – she dropped in unexpectedly and babysat Derek and Mer’s kids so they could both work – next week she will have a much bigger role.

She and Derek, both neurosurgeons, will operate on a pair of conjoined twins. Most of her scenes will be with her on-screen brother, Derek, show is played by Patrick Dempsey. Here’s what she had to say about that and the episodes that follow:

“I’m working mostly with Patrick but there’s a little bit with Ellen but as these episodes continue, Meredith and Amelia do start to forge a bit of a relationship, which they never really had before. Amelia was the sister in law and Meredith was the girlfriend so they didn’t really have an opportunity to get close until now so I think they’re starting to forge a relationship. And it turns out that Derek has pretty good taste in women!”

So Amelia’s arc on the show will last more than just one or two episodes. When asked if this is going to become a full-time gig or if she would be open to that, Scorsone said she would do just about anything for showrunner Shonda Rhimes. That includes doing anywhere from 1 to 500 episodes, if asked.

Since Scorsone has been gone from television, she’s become a new mom. She described the experience as being beyond anything she had imagined. Stepping back into the role of Amelia now was good timing for her. And the light amount of work the first week on the job was blessing. Though she loves being back, being a mom gives things a different perspective. Scorsone says she’s not as likely to dawdle after work because now she wants to get home to spend time with her child.

Are you looking forward to seeing more of Amelia Shepherd in the coming weeks? “Grey's Anatomy” Season 10 airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC and will air “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” with Isaiah Washington on Thursday, May 1 on ABC.
