The promo for episode 11 of “Grey’s Anatomy” seemed to suggest that the settlement for the plane crash was finally going to reach a conclusion but that was not really the case. “The End Is the Beginning Is the End" aired Thursday Jan. 17 at 8 p.m.
Richard is depressed
Everyone is worried about Richard. It has been a month since Adele’s death and he still isn’t back in surgery. Instead he is cataloging the specimen’s he’s saved from a lifetime’s work so he can pitch the momentous. Avery’s mom, Catherine sends cookies and calls but Richard ignores her until she shows up. Then he goes off on her because Adele got sick and died while he was busy having an affair with her. Later they make amends and Catherine wants simply to hold his hand while he grieves.
Cristina and Owen
Cristina and Owen are having the best sex since they got married. They are in no hurry to define their relationship but want rather to simply enjoy it. They also have a great laugh over Owen accidentally feeling up Jo from behind when he thought she was Cristina.
Patient Storyline
A pediatric patient of Arizona’s who was also a former patient of Mark Sloane’s comes in for what will be his fifth surgery to correct facial abnormalities he was born with. Avery is now on the case and has a different plan for the surgery than Mark did which puts Arizona and he at odds. After talking to Derek, Avery decides to go his own way and the surgery is a success.
Alex and Jo
Alex and Jo are still hanging out together but just as friends. She chides him for having a house but no furniture and no glassware. Later she wins a $1000 bet over who will win a ping pong contest, Derek or Shane. Shane wins, Alex pays up and Jo buys him a couch with the money. Any bets on long it is before these two end up in a romantic relationship?
April misses Avery
April is mooning around and it is apparent to everyone that she misses Jackson. Being the standup guy he is, Jackson goes to see April to tell her himself that he is sleeping with Stephanie. He knows how it will affect her and he wanted her to hear it from him before hospital gossip told her. She is hurt by the news and holds it together. She tells him she misses him and his friendship. He says they can still be friends and she says standing here, looking at him, all she wants to do is kiss him, so no, she isn’t ready to be friends with him. .
The Settlement
The gang is called to the courthouse to hear the ruling and Callie is late. When she arrives, Meredith, Derek, Arizona and Cristina are sitting there looking stunned. Arizona informs Callie that the judge found the airline had numerous mechanical problems and the hospital should have known that, therefore the hospital was negligent. They were each awarded $15 million! Callie is ecstatic and demands they all share a celebratory dinner.
Cristina invites Owen but he feels Derek, who blames him for the crash, won’t want him there. Cristina tells Derek it is time to forgive.
At the dinner, Callie makes a moving toast about not forgetting those they lost. She goes on to say how each of them is still here, moving on and that should be celebrated. Cristina calls Owen and asks him to come again. Derek even gets on the phone and asks him to come but Owen can’t.
It seems Owen is in a meeting with the hospital’s lawyers about the settlement. The insurance company has rules about only two attending physicians travelling together on hospital business. When Arizona bumped Karev, she made it three and that negates the insurance company’s liability. They won’t pay. Owen asks what happens now and is told that hospital must pay. He knows the hospital doesn’t have that kind of reserves and asks how they do that. He is told the hospital will have to file bankruptcy.
Meanwhile, Meredith announces her pregnancy to the dinner table.
Will the hospital actually collapse under the weight of the settlement? How will the doctors react when they learn of this new wrinkle? Tune in next week to find out what happens on “Grey’s Anatomy.”
