Dyed-in-the-wool “Grey’s Anatomy” fans know that this is Sandra Oh’s last season on the show. As such, Shonda Rhimes has created a storyline for Cristina Yang’s departure that somehow involves, Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington). Variety reported today that ABC has decided to lead into the Burke episode, titled “We Are Never Getting Back Together” will a special encore episode from the last time Burke and Yang were together…their wedding.

It was seven years ago that “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” first aired in May 2007. Washington left the show after controversy over anti-gay remarks he made to fellow actor TR Knight became too heated.

After Burke jilted Yang at the altar, he was never seen again. His name was barely mentioned in the show and fans watched as Cristina struggled with the heartbreak and wreckage her life had become. Other than a blip of a mention when he won the coveted Harper Avery award for work he’d done together with Cristina, he simply vanished.

ABC had originally intended to air an encore of last week’s episode prior to this week’s new episode but opted for the look back instead. There will be some other familiar faces in the episode including Katherine Heigl, TR Knight, Eric Dane and Kate Walsh. The episode will air in the hour directly before the regularly scheduled time for the series to air on Thursday.

In the new episode, Cristina turns to Meredith for advice as she tries to figure out what to do with her career after losing the Harper Avery award because of her connections to the hospital. Webber learned last week that no one from the hospital will ever win the award because the hospital is owned, in part, by and Avery (Jackson) and he sits on the board. It would be politically incorrect.

Grey’s Anatomy” will air “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” on Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. followed immediately by “We Are Never Getting Back Together” at 8 p.m. on ABC.
