“Map of You” is the fifth episode on season 10 of “Grey’s Anatomy” and was all about how we connect – emotionally and physically. For Dr. Alex Karev, those connections centered on his relationship with his estranged father.
His girlfriend, Jo Wilson is pestering him about why he isn’t coming home, the late hours he’s keeping and why he isn’t even answering her phone calls. With no real input from him, she eventually asks him if he’s seeing somebody else to which he answers emphatically, no.
What he doesn’t tell her is that after his shifts are over, he’s been sneaking off to the bar where his father is playing guitar with a band. Each night he sits there, listening to the music made by the man who gave him life and then, according to Alex, ruined that life.
This night, after the music has ended, the man sits down next to Alex and orders a drink which Alex pays for. The man thinks Alex looks familiar and chalks it up to recognizing him as a doctor from the hospital. When he learns Alex is a pediatric surgeon, he relays a story about how a pediatric surgeon saved his son’s life when the boy was just 2. Alex listens to the story and realizes the man cared for the child deeply.
They talk more and Alex shares that his own farther taught him to play guitar as a child. It takes some convincing but since the bar is empty now, Alex agrees to join the man on stage and the two play a song together.
It sparks a memory in the older man and he regales Alex with stories about how he taught his own son to play guitar too and offers to show him a picture. Thinking this might be the moment when Alex can reveal who he really is, he is instead shocked by the picture of his father with an Asian woman and young Asian boy. He learns his father has a second family, one he left behind in Florida years ago.
As the man laments having left them and wonders if he should return, Alex’s blood boils. He can’t believe the man keeps creating families and then abandons them. Alex warns him never to return to the boy, to just leave him alone and as the discussion grows more heated, Alex punches him in the face and leaves. In the final moments, an expression of recognition crosses the man’s face as he realizes his son just punched him and left.
Back at the hospital, Alex rails at Jo, telling her it is her fault for pushing him to talk to his dad and that he has never hurt so much in his life.
Will Alex’s father seek him out and try to explain or make amends? Will Alex let him? How will this affect Alex’s relationship with Jo? Tune in on Thursdays at 8 p.m. to find out. In the meantime, check back for more news, updates and spoilers as they become available.
