News of Sandra Oh’s departure following the conclusion of season 10 of “Grey’s Anatomy” has many fans distraught. What may be the motive for the departure of her character, Cristina Yang, from the halls of Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital was hinted at during episode 2, “Everybody’s Crying Mercy” which aired on ABC on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m.
Owen and Cristina parted ways in the season 9 finale when the “kid” issue reared its head for the last time. Cristina realized Owen would never be completely happy in their relationship as long as she was unwilling to have children so she cut him loose. The premiere of season 10 opened with the former couple finding all kinds of excuses to have sex together until Cristina realized they were just putting off the inevitable.
In last night’s episode, they struggled to remain in a hands-off neutrality, each wanting to reach out and touch the other – a gesture of comfort, a kiss for luck. Each time they stopped themselves but it was incredibly difficult and emotionally draining for both of them.
The solution Cristina came up with by the end of the episode was that they should date other people. Acknowledging that it would be hard and weird and that she didn’t want to any more than he did, she saw it as the only way they could try to move on. Reluctantly, Owen agreed.
Was the episode a prelude to new romances for Owen or Cristina? Or will Cristina leave Grey Sloane Memorial to put distance between her and Owen? We’ll have to keep watching to find out.
The next episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursday, Oct. 10 on ABC at 8 p.m.,
