Police authorities in Cameron County reported yesterday that they found a number of dummy grenades both inside and outside a recreational vehicle (RV) parked just north of Beach Access 6 at South Padre Island on the Texas Gulf Coast. Located just 25 miles north of Mexico the island’s tropical weather, 34 miles of pristine beaches, abundant wildlife and numerous campgrounds – including Andy Bowie, Isla Blanca and South Padre Island KOA - makes this a popular destination for both RV snowbirds and weekend warriors.
Two grenades were found outside the motor home – one of which was taped, apparently with pin removed, to the main entry door handle - and one inside according to Sheriff Omar Luzio. The owner of the RV, an Edinburg resident, claimed that two retired Navy Seals were staying in the RV. If true, this might explain the use of such ordnance to deter would be thieves and trespassers, though securing your RV and your campground perimeter with explosives doesn’t appear on any standard dry camping checklist (newbies please take note). A “Caution” sign posted on the door of the RV read, “You are trespassing. Smile for the cameras. Here and at both entrances. Dangerous booby traps.” A second caution sign warned visitors that two combat trained “ex Navy Seals live here.”
There’s an old saying that “an Englishman’s home is his castle.” Clearly this sentiment has spread to RV owners across the pond. Booyaa!
