She has been on display in the front window at Visual Art Studio since March.
She is a mermaid made of 87,000 toothpicks and a story of the sea.
She is “Pamlico” and she is leaving Richmond after First Friday, Sept. 3, to make her way to an international people’s choice award competition at Grand Rapids Public Museum-Exhibition Center in Michigan.
Greg Lewis’s mermaid, named for the largest body of water on the East Coast, will compete for ArtPrize’s grand prize of $250,000.
“Pamlico” carries her story to Michigan as the mermaid who watches over shipwrecks and carries the souls of those who perish to the bottom of the sea.
To cast your vote for Lewis’s toothpick masterpiece that took 18 months of full-time work to complete, visit ArtPrize’s web site.
Also on First Friday, “Chasing the Light,” new PhotoImpressions on Canvas by Susan Lamson, will open with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m.
Lamson’s first solo exhibition was at Visual Art Studio in 2001. Her new work comprises mixed media of photography and painting. Landscapes and imagery from local places such as Maymont Park and Williamsburg will be among the pieces on view through Friday, Oct. 29.
“Silent Illusion,” new Prismacolor drawings, photographs and graphics by Susan Hribernik, and “A Closer Look,” new photography by Chester artist Cathy Short, will also open on Sept. 3.
Both exhibits will be on display through Friday, Oct. 29.
Visual Art Studio is on summer hiatus but “Pamlico” can be seen in the front window. It will reopen First Friday, Sept. 3 and gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.
Visual Art Studio is located at 208 West Broad Street and can be reached at 804/644-1368.
