Wichita Falls native Geg Abbott won the Republican nomination for Texas governor in a landslide last night, Tues. March 4, winning 92 % of the vote. His three GOP rivals could garner less than 8 % combined. The Wichitan has served as the top law enforcement officer in the Lone Star State as Attorney General for the past 12 years.
During his victory speech at the Aldaco Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio Abbott said, "I want to thank my brother Gary (who was on the stage with him) for twenty years service in the U.S. Navy. It is because of men and women like him who have put their lives on the line so many times that we are able to meet like we are tonight at meetings like this. The men and women of the U.S. military put their lives on the line over and over again."
Gary's wife Denise was also present on the stage. Abbott's daughter Audrey introduced him to the packed house.
He further said, "These veterans have had our backs. And I want them to know I will have your backs when I am governor."
"My partner in this campaign has been my partner in life. My wonderful wife of 32 years Cecilia Abbott. We were married right here in San Antonio in 1981. And now later this year when I raise my right hand as governor my wife will make history as the first Latina first lady in the history of Texas. Her parents Bill and Lucy Palin are also here. Thank you for raising such a wonderful daughter."
"The blending of cultures in the Lone Star State works. We are all one people. We are all Texans."
The crowd applauded loudly.
"And we unite on the common ground of faith. And family. And freedom."
Once again he was met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd which packed the historic Aldaco Restaurant near the Alamodome.
"It doesn't matter what your race is. It doesn't matter what your background is. It doesn't matter what your age is. If you are a person in this state looking for opportunities or a way to succeed than I am your choice for governor of this great state of Texas."
"What direction will we follow in the State of Texas?"
"There is no way we need a bigger government in the State o f Texas. I have fought against that mindset. I have fought against things like Obamacare. I have fought against the overreaching federal government which tries to control too much of your lives."
"More freedom for individuals instad of having their rights trampled on by the federal government. More freedom for local teachers and educators to have control over how they teach our children.
"With all those freedoms, we must remember those rights don't come from government. They come from God. We have freedom only when the government's power is restrained. The government answers to you. Not the other way around."
"As governor I will keep Texas the national leader in creating jobs. Texas has been the top state for exports, for energey production and for creating jobs. As your governor I will keep Texas on top."
"Less government, lower taxes and the right to work which will prevent bankruptcies like we saw in Detroit. As governor I will address the needs of the people without raising taxes and by building more roads and provide relife from the water shortage.
"There is something wrong with a state does not allow a valedictorian to mention God in his speech but doesn't stop the drug cartels or gangs from terrorizing our cities. As governor, I will keep our communities safe."
"I will make education a top priority. Both of my wives parents were teachers. My wife herself was both a teacher and a principal. We must improve education for the next generation. We must provide local control. We must stop forcing our teachers to teach for so many standardized tests. We must make higher education more affordable and more acceddssibble. As your governor I will assure that we put an end to CSCOPE. Because we know that parents and teachers know better how to educate children than bureaucrats in Washington D.C."
"Texas is ranked No. 1 in so many ways. I think it is time to elevate education in Texas to be ranked number one in the nation. I need your help to elect me as your next governor. If we are to fight for the values of the greatest people to inhabit this earth, I need you poeple on my side all the way to Nov. 4 to elect me the next governor of the great state of Texas!"
Anyone who heard Greg Abbott speak last night has no doubt about what a strong man he is. He has a clear message as to his plans for the state of Texas. He has been working for Teaxs and the people of Texas for many years and fought many battles and won. He has been the general in the battlefield as Texas Attorney General and now hopes to become commander in chief for Texas. His promise to continue to fight for Texas is sincere and his past perfomance backs up every word he said. Loud applause cascaded around the large restuarant as Abbott finished his speech and left the stage showing how much those in attendance believe in Greg Abbott.
