Wichita Falls, Texas native Greg Abbot today praised a new law which help his office fight sexual predators. Abbott, who is Texas Attorney General, discussed the Child Protection Act as a weapon in the war against human trafficking and sexual predators.
Abbot said the bi-partisan law will help his Cyber-Crimes Unit, which is one of the top finders and prosecutors of child predators on the Internet.
Since 2003, his unit has arrested 304 suspects for using child pornography. His Fugitive Unit has arrested 1,247 sex offenders for violating parole.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn sponsored the Child Protection Act which was signed into law by President Barack Obama Friday.
The new Act increases penalties for child pornography and protects child witnesses which is a good thing.
Children testifying has always been a sensitive issue for prosecutors as child victims are frequently intimidated when they come to court to testify against their predators.
The law also gives U.S. marshals stronger authority to obtain time-sensitive documents. This law further extends federal funding for regional Internet task forces that prosecute cybercrimes.
Cornyn praised President Obama.
"I'm glad to see the president quickly signed this measure into law to bring greater justice and protection to victims and allow law enforcement to take immediate steps to stop child predators," Cornyn said, according to the Associated Press.
The Texas Attorney General's Office operates the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force for 134 counties in southern Texas, using federal funds which help local law enforcement agencies.
It is good to see the politicians still can work together on some legislation which will help Wichita Falls law enforcement in the prosecution of dangerous offenders. Kudos to Greg Abbott, John Cornyn and President Obama for doing their part to enact this good law.
