Chicago’s River North market desperately needs parking space. New construction projects including office buildings and a hotel have resulted in the loss of over 1,000 surface parking spots in the area. The 800 space Greenway Self Park garage, at the corner of Kinzie and Clark will be across the street from 353 N. Clark, a 45 story office building opening this fall and adjacent to the new 523 room SpringHill Suites Hotel.
The 285,000 sq. ft. structure is currently under construction and slated to open this fall. Amazingly enough, the facility will feature several green elements including six vertical wind turbines along the southwest corner. The electricity provided by the turbines will provide exterior lighting for the structure and contribute excess power to the grid.
Variable glass channel spacing on the building’s façade will eliminate the need for energy intensive forced-air ventilation systems. The garage will also have a green roof and rain cisterns to collect water for irrigation and maintenance. All construction materials for the building were obtained from within a 500 mile radius.
The garage will provide plug-in stations for electric vehicles on the first few floors and a bike room on the first floor to accommodate two dozen bicycles,
More than 14,000 square feet of retail space will be located on the structure's ground level.
The developer for the project is Friedman Properties, Ltd. and the architects are HOK and Cubellis. Bovis Lend-Lease is the contractor.
