A Greenville K-9 officer died Saturday from injuries received when he was hit by a car. Fox Carolina News reported the story June 14.
K-9 officer Gio was hit by a car near Woodruff and Scuffletown Road around 1:00 p.m. today. Gio was off duty, and jumped out of the vehicle he was riding in, and was hit by a passing car. He died later in the afternoon from his injuries.
The Greenville Police Department issued a statement on their Facebook page
"At approximately 1 PM today the Greenville Police Department lost one of our own. K9 Gio succumbed to injuries after he was struck by a vehicle near Woodruff Rd. and Scuffletown Rd. This occurred during an off duty capacity as Gio jumped from the vehicle into the roadway and was struck by another vehicle. He has assisted in many arrests during his time with the department and completed several successful tracks! There will be a remembrance service held for Gio, and we will release details about that at a later date. He will forever be missed! Rest in peace Gio!"
Gio was best known recently from the heroic act he performed back in March. Gio is responsible for taking down a handcuffed suspect, who had escaped a bail bondsman and was on the run.
This Examiner article covered the take-down, which was Gio's first big assignment.
Rest in peace, Gio. So sad that your life ended so tragically.
