Greenville mother in jail after abandoning newborn in a trash can

A Greenville woman has been charged with attempted murder after placing her newborn baby boy in a trash can, Fox Carolina News reported April 21.

Sharon Lenise Ferguson, 28, left a trail of blood leading to a trash can, where her baby was discovered outside a home on Monday. The newborn was discovered when a homeowner in the Chaney Street area came to check on a residence.

The newborn was found in the trash at the end of the bloody trail, placed in a plastic grocery bag that had been wrapped in a pink blanket. It's unknown how long the infant was alone before his rescue.

Ferguson was found outside a liquor store on Laurens Road at East Washington Street, where she was taken into custody late Monday afternoon.

In a media statement made to WYFF4, public information officer Johnathan Bragg confirmed the mother was charged with one count attempted murder and one count of unlawful neglect of a child.

Rescue crews worked on the newborn before transporting him to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Ferguson is in jail on a $125,000 bond.
