Bluegrass is a genre that has consistently wooed and entertained fans for over 80 years. Helping to keep it alive and well is Michigan quartet Greensky Bluegrass, who are currently touring to promote their fourth studio album, Handguns. Bluegrass originated in the American south with the music of Bill Monroe and has evolved through artists like Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, and Alison Krauss. Today, there are many active bluegrass bands who play at their own festivals, constantly innovating and improvising.
Greensky Bluegrass is one of the most progressive contemporary bluegrass bands touring today. Rather than simply replicating the traditional style, Greensky combines folk harmonies, contemporary lyrics, and a uptempo beat to create their unique take on the genre. The titular “Handguns” features a beautiful country guitar sound, soaring lyrics, and a catchy chorus, all of which combine to make a feel-good bluegrass song. What is unique about this album is that it features some lengthy studio recordings, including the fantastic track “All Four”. Bluegrass and jam bands are known for live improvisation, which often extends their songs well past the ten-minute mark and make for unique and lively performances. “All Four” is a musical odyssey featuring not only improv but a distinct suite-like structure. Not once during its 11:37 running time does the sound lose momentum and energy, which is an incredible feat for a bluegrass studio track.
After an active summer performing at some of the nation’s premiere bluegrass and jam band festivals, Greensky Bluegrass is stopping in DC Friday October 14 to play at the Living Classrooms benefit “A Night at the Yards”. For those interested in hearing the band and supporting the cause, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
