Billie Joe Armstrong opened up to People magazine on Feb. 27 regarding his mental breakdown causing him to enter into an outpatient rehab program. Because Armstrong had troubles getting sober; Greenday felt it best to cancel the rest of the tour. It was the only way the singer was going to get well and stay clean.
September 2012 Billie Joe took center stage with fellow Greenday members at the I Hear Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas. Instead of opening his mouth to sing, the rocker lets out a string of profanities that took shots at people from the concert promoters, to Clear Channel radio, to pop star Justin Bieber.
Billie Joe smashed his guitar while screaming, “I’m not f---king Justin Bieber, you motherf---ers.”
This mental breakdown was caused by a dependency on pills for Armstrong’s insomnia and anxiety combined with alcohol addiction. After the show Armstrong agreed to a thirty day outpatient treatment program. Billie Joe, who turned just turned 41, talked to Rolling Stone about the struggles to get sober.
“I couldn’t predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night,” Billie Joe tells Rolling Stone writer David Fricke. When the singer's wife told him things were “bad” Armstrong called his manager and immediately got on a plane and went directly to rehab.
The singer says he’s sober and ready to resume touring on March 10 in Pomona, Calif.
