Green Way, Waldbaum's all natural store brand is worth a try

Green Way Products on the Shelves

Monday, I tried my local Waldbaum's Green Way Sunday Roaster.  It was fantastic and worth the $7.99 price.  Juicy, crisp, sticky golden skin with just the right amount of salt (250 mg. per serving) to enhance the chicken, no MSG.

I normally buy a store-made roast chicken when I just give up on what I feel like eating or I am making something for my family that they want and I don't. Such was the case for this night.

Even though I am "Chef Steph" and cook homemade, from-scratch meals at least 5 nights a week, my family wanted pasta with jarred sauce (yikes!).  I loathe that.  I have never found one suitable (I will buy Prego, Traditional variety only because it does not have sugar or high fructose corn syrup in it.  The family, not I, likes it. Yikes, again!) I saw the boxes of pasta at the end cap of the pasta aisle and immediately was drawn to the minimal packaging and "green friendly" writing usually associated with organic. Green Way Penne Rigate was $1.99, organic and made from "finely milled durum wheat semolina".  I liked it equally as much as Barilla's brand and this was organic (albeit, it was from Italy so the fossil fuels used to ship it negated the organic for me!).  The Tomato Basil pasta sauce was all natural as well and was chock full of basil and garlic pieces.  The family loved it!

This is a great week to try Green Way's products. The company, The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company is the parent company of A&P, Waldbaum's and Pathmark.  They are just rolling out the products and are featuring them in their weekly circulars.  The new Green Way brand will soon feature more than 200 items, including various breads, fresh vegetables, fresh herbs, milk, yogurt, extra virgin olive oil, salsas, sauces, balsamic vinegar, dressings and more.

Supermarket News was told, “There's two types of customers when it comes to organic and natural foods: those who have a lifestyle that consistently involves organic and natural foods, and those who would like to purchase more organic and natural foods but have always felt that price was a hurdle for them to purchase those products,” Doug Palmer, vice president for A&P's Own Brands. “Green Way is priced at a level that they can afford day in and day out.”

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE sauce, when the wife has time she likes to make it fresh, a very time consuming exercise.

but as far as jarred sauces go, it's always hit or miss, but I do like the Ragu marinara and that's as low as I go...

I did try toe Green Way marinara, and the tomato basil, -- I wouldn't have picked it up if it wasn't organic, I do not regret buying it. it was delicious.

however...my current favorite among jarred sauces is Paesana marinara.... no sugar, no corn syrup and gluten free -- I could actually drink it from the jar

    yea it's that good.. O_o

I actually am not a real lover of jarred sauce. However, I will tell you that I love to use Trader Joe's Marinara in the green CAN as a base for my own at times. I also tried Mezzetta, Tomato Basil and it was the best I ever tasted outside of my own. I also liked Iavarone's Vodka Sauce, although it has no Vodka in it and my own fresh one does. I am not big on the Ragu at all... but go for it. My husband loves Prego Traditional. I buy it for him even though I don't like it.

i recently purchased Greenway Organic Chicken Broth

at my local Long Island,NY Waldbaums in Melville. It made an inccredibly delicious split pea soup one of my signature dishes. The price was excellent, my only negative comment is. why does
it contain so much sodium?? (590 mgs) I shall continue to use this very fine product in the future(I use quite a bit of broth and stock.)
