Vacations were designed as a business tool to allow workers time to detox from the daily grind. However, in today’s economy, going on a fun family trip or romantic trip for two can be out of reach financially, time consuming and frustrating. The term staycation was coined to represent less expensive options to that long trip on a plane to stay at a hotel that looked good on paper but in reality is not what you expected.
Staycation options are more than an economical way to spend time away from the office, but can also benefit the environment. Here are some green staycation ideas for the whole family.
1. Turn your home into a dream vacation spot. Have the children draw picture of Paris or Milan that can be put up around the home or put up other artifacts from previous trips that help give the feel of the place you chose. Cook foods from that region of the world. Most of all, turn off cell phones, computers, tablets, etc. and just enjoy your time away from work.
2. Explore your home town. Many of us go about our daily lives no realizing the true potential of where we live. Get in your car and explore an area near your home you would not normally find yourself going.
3. Take a day trip. Get away from the hustle and bustle of your surroundings, pick a place on the map that is a couple of hours away that you have never heard of. Visit a zoo in a neighboring community that you have never been to. Pack a picnic basket and take a drive to a new spot to spend quality time as a family.
4. Camp out in the back yard. Pitch a tent, build a fire in the pit, roast some marshmallows and have a travel free, stress free camping trip in the back yard. Miss the sounds of nature? Pipe them in using sites like Partners In Rhyme where you can download sounds from around the world.
Taking time away from work helps us recharge and come back with fresh minds. Using that time to learn about where you live or just have some quality downtime with loved ones while you recharge your batteries can be done on a limited budget while at the same time reducing your impact on the environment. These are a few examples of ways to stay green while taking time away from work. We welcome all other ideas for our readers.
