Getting your daily value’s worth of the vitamins found in green veggies can in can be a task. Greens can be bitter and gritty, and (let’s face it) if we don’t like them we will steer clear of them at all costs, regardless of their bountiful health benefits. Many will opt to take vitamins to fulfill those daily vitamin and mineral needs, but sources say that taking pills as a replacement for the actual foods they are found in is not the best way to stay healthy. Luckily for any of you who dislike having green veggies in their diet there is an alternative to both avoidance and vitamin pills: smoothies!
It may sound unappealing to toss a handful of spinach and/or kale into your delicious fruit smoothie, but rest assured that the mixture will not come out tasting entirely of vegetables. The smoothie will look green in color, but will taste just like the fruit smoothie you have made all along. If you have not attempted making a smoothie from home before, you may find the recipe below to be a helpful springboard into the wonderful world of smoothie making:
½ cup blueberries
½ cup raspberries
½ cup liquid (water, milk, soy milk, etc. It’s your choice! Adjust the amount of liquid to make the smoothie as dense as you like.)
¼ or ½ cup chopped kale (if you are nervous trying it for the first time go for the smaller amount!)
¼ or ½ cup chopped spinach
Making new foods from home can be a daunting task, especially since you will have to spend a little more money coming by all of the ingredients. There is the added concern that after you spend said money you will not like the smoothie you have made. It's a lifestyle choice that can be difficult to dive into, but starting with pre-made beverages like the ones Naked produce may be more welcoming. Taking part in blogs and actively talking to real people (rather than step-by-step recipes and internet articles) may also make the plunge a bit easier.
Play around with different combinations of ingredients involving green vegetables if the recipe above doesn't do it for you, talk with friends who have experience making green smoothies, and eventually you will create something you personally enjoy. Happy smoothie making!
